Graham Johnson with Norwegian bands Egg...
After
graduating from high school last year, eighteen-year-old pianist Graham
Johnson from Chico, CA, headed off to Norway for a year before beginning
his undergraduate studies this fall at Oberlin College in Ohio. Utilizing
his time abroad creatively, he connected with native Norwegian jazz
musicians to jam, perform and record. One such group Johnson connected
with was the power trio, Egg....

Keys to the highway
Local jazz pianist Graham Johnson jets to Norway

Chico News
and Review
On July 31, the day this story comes out, Graham Johnson will be high in the sky
in a plane bound for Oslo, Norway. The 18-year-old pianist, a recent graduate of Chico High School, will spend the next year as an American Field Service (AFS) exchange student with the Narjord
family--Jon and Brita and their daughter Magni-- in the town of Melhus, near Trondheim.
Why Norway?
Johnson responds that his father, Scott Johnson, known around Chico as the other half of the Graham
& Scott Johnson jazz duo, was also an exchange student to Norway in his day. And the Johnson family still has friends there, whom they visited just last summer. So it's a little bit familiar.
But it's also a long way from the younger Johnson's "suburban America," as he puts it. And he likes that.

Ever Learning, Ever Growing
Pianist Graham Johnson Takes Experiences From Chico Jazz Scene With Him To Norway, College
by Stephen Fratallone
Jazz
Connections Magazine
Some people may look upon Graham Johnson as a musical prodigy. But the quiet, unassuming,18-year-old
keyboardist/composer from Chico, CA, doesn't consider himself as such. In fact, he says his talent that has graced the Chico jazz scene for the past four years has only developed through lots
of "sweat," perhaps a few "tears," and thankfully, with virtually no "blood."
"I work hard at things I really want to do," Johnson said from his home. "As far as natural ability goes, it came as a result of a lot of listening."
Even at so young an age, Johnson's hard work has earned him the respect and admiration of his musical peers...

Chico News
and Review
When I arrived at The Bean Scene at five minutes to 7, Graham and Scott Johnson, son and father (respectively) duo,
were already into their first song, having begun slightly ahead of their scheduled 7 p.m. start time (rare in this town!). I settled into one of the very comfy couches near the musicians and
set up shop, my Sierra Nevada Pale Ale and notebook on the convenient coffee table...
